Word of the Week 23/10/15

Hello and welcome to Word of the Week.

If you’re new here, Word of the Week is a nice and simple weekly linky, with everyone welcome to pop by and share. You reflect back on the past week and sum it up in one word. Then share your word with us in a blog post, with as little or as much explanation as you like. It’s a fun and friendly linky, so please do be lovely and visit as many of the other blogs as you can and share with them your thoughts on their words and weeks. I do comment on every entry to the linky, and if you add the Word of the Week badge to your post to help spread the ‘word’, I also tweet them out.

My word of the week this week is:

History

As you may know, I’m currently studying History with the Open University. This week I’ve completed my first assignment and embarked upon the next block, immersing myself in The Reformation. I’m really enjoying it, and it’s a period in history that I’m very interested in. So I’ve been reading it, writing it, and thinking about it! I am also preparing for my next tutorial which takes place tomorrow, which I’m hoping will both consolidate my learning so far and offer fresh perspectives on it. But that’s not all..

This week Boo’s school reading book was ‘Castles and Palaces’, so as well as chatting it through (probably in a bit more detail than my daughter really required, but I was warming to the subject!), we decided to build on her learning by taking a trip to a castle at the weekend. I shared all about that here yesterday, as we visited Tamworth Castle. I do love walking round old buildings, reading and seeing yes, but also just taking in the feel of the place and trying to imagine all that those walls have witnessed over the centuries.

And finally, my latest addiction. Now, before I mention this, I’d like to state that I do absolutely understand that this is not ‘history’, it is pure fantasy and fiction – I do get that! Game of Thrones has hit the Reading household. Whilst it is all fantasy, it has the feel of medieval times, with the knights, costumes, buildings and customs, so that I feel transported back in time watching it. The Husband has warned me not to get confused and talk about the Lannisters in my history assignments! I posted about it earlier this week, and with the weather getting colder, every mention of ‘winter is coming’ takes me right back there!

What about you? What one word sums up your week best? Please grab the badge, link up and share.

  1. It’s great to enjoy a subject so much you become completely immersed in it! Sounds like you are really enjoying the course and it is becoming part of everyday life including GOT! I’ve not watched it but hubby loves it! Thanks for hosting #wotw xx

    1. I am really enjoying it, I’ve always loved history. Game of Thrones is definitely an addiction, though – not sure what I’ll do when we’re all caught up! X

  2. Great word for your week!
T’s history lessons at school are becoming more and more interesting for both him and me, and we have quite good chats about how the content hasn’t much changed since I was at secondary school!
You sound like you’re really enjoying your course, so glad you went for it.
Have a fab weekend and thanks for hosting x

  3. So glad that you are enjoying your history course so much and going to visit a castle sounds like a lovely day out. I can imagine that when Boo brings home books about history it is easy to get carried away with talking about it, particularly if it is something you are passionate about. Hope you all have a lovely weekend and thank you for hosting #WotW 🙂

  4. Have you watched the medieval series that started on BBC2 last night-think you might enjoy it. You really must get out to Kenilworth, you’d absolutely love it. When you do, check out the ‘graffiti’-some of it stretches quite far back xx

    1. I haven’t – too busy with Game of Thrones! Thanks, will look out for it, though. We’ll definitely be off to Kenilworth in the near future x

  5. I’m a massive history fan. One day I will finish my history degree. The reformation is a very interesting time, I do believe that it ended up being financially rather than morally driven.
Have you watched the Lost Kingdom. It’s like GoT but without the magic and is based on actual people (with a huge dose of artistic license) like Alfred the Great and Ragnar.

  6. I haven’t been to Tamworth Castle in years! although we do take the kids to the park in the grounds sometimes. Thrones is excellent, just don’t get attached to the characters.. 😉
You could also try Vikings (drama about real Vikings) and Black Sails (drama about fictional and historical pirates) both have been on the History channel. Black Sails has Toby Stephens in it.. <3 LOL!
Not suitable for young eyes and ears though!

  7. Being able to share your passion for something with the children is a lovely way of allowing them to see you for you, and more than just Mummy. And then being able to bring it to life be visiting a castle is such a lovely idea. It really sounds like you’re managing to fit it all in and are embracing your OU course. I’m still in awe of how to manage to eek out some time to study as well as everything else you do. Amazing juggler, clearly
Thanks for hosting this fab linky

    1. It’s lovely and I do hope one of my kids gets the history bug, but we’ll see! Hmm, it is a challenge fitting it all in, that’s for sure! X

  10. Hi Jocelyn, I think I should change my #WotW to peculiar as I was unable to see any posts past last weeks #WotW on Google Chrome, but had no problem on Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft’s Edge browser!

It’s really nice that you are studying something you really enjoy and I have found that if I’m trying to ‘educate’ my two about something and feel myself getting a little carried away, my cue to stop is the loss of the coloureds of their eyes. Once I take a breath and stop talking their eyes correct themselves… Quite amazing to witness.

It would be a classic if you were to get Game of Thrones confused with your studies. Someone somewhere is bound to have done it!

    Thank you for hosting.

    xx

  11. I sure wish I’d learnt history through research, re-enactments and exploration rather than boring history books. Geocaching has opened up more interest for me than being lectured. It also didn’t help learning about wars when I was more interested in the Romans. I’m starting to sound like I’m ranting right? sorry. Thanks for hosting #wotw

    1. Yes, I suspect many a dull book or lesson has killed the subject somewhere along the line, as with any subject. Not a rant, just a heartfelt comment!

  12. Ha ha I have so many friends obsessed with GOT, I have yet to watch it and see what the fuss is about. But clearly I need ti check it out after so many endorsements. I would love to study history I just love it, especially fashion and hair I get so excited about it so I totally get you, and I also think the best way to reinforce learning is through travel so the castle is an amazing idea, have a fab week lovely lady x

    1. It is brilliant! Finished season 2 last night, and keen to get onto 3 tonight! It definitely is, a great way to learn and soak it all in x

  13. I love your word this week, if nothing more than because of GoT! I am addicted to the show and was actually wearing my Khaleesi shirt all day yesterday. Every time I hear about winter my head springs to the same place so know you are not alone there!

I hope you have a wonderful week 🙂

    1. It’s brilliant, isn’t it? It’s also filling my head far too much each day! Love the sound of that shirt 🙂
