Swimming with SwimFin

My son is three years old and we’ve yet to really do any swimming with him. He’s been in the pool on odd occasions like holidays, but that’s about it. I’m not overly concerned as my daughter didn’t start her swimming lessons until shortly after she started school and is doing well now, but I would like to start taking him and ensure that he is at least happy in the water and is not scared of it. I’d like him to be able to splash about, put his head under water, play on the slides and so forth, and see swimming as a brilliant adventure, rather than fear it. So with all of that in mind, we got him a SwimFin and resolved to start taking him swimming regularly.

So what’s this SwimFin then?

SwimFin is the first truly new development in the teaching of swimming for decades – tried and tested to assist anyone in learning to swim. Unlike arm-bands, noodles or other devices, SwimFin works in harmony with the body, helping to develop a better and more natural swimming position.

SwimFin compensates for different abilities, providing as much support as the swimmer needs, yet giving confidence to even the most timid learner.

SwimFin is also a flotation device that complies with international safety standards, providing enough buoyancy to keep an adult afloat. And after it has done it’s job as a learning-aid, SwimFin will always find use as a fun water toy.

As we’re unable to take photos in our local pool, the kids had fun modelling in the back garden, so that you can see what it looks like and how the SwimFin works.

It’s very easy to put on and comes in one size. It’s a case of attaching the velcro straps securely around your child’s body. As you can see, this SwimFin fits both my 3 year old and 6 year old perfectly well.

We also have a set of Funky Floaties and Dinky Divers dive sticks, which he just loves playing with.

This is a teaching aid, rather than something that will keep him upright whilst in the water, such as those seats and rings that they can sit in. Yet even though it means he’s not fully supported, he’s very happy splashing around in the pool. As a swimming aid, I can really see the benefits as unlike many other devices, his arms and body are completely free to be able to swim without restrictions. Once he’s in position to swim, the SwimFin adds extra buoyancy and support, whilst still enabling him to swim in a natural way.

From a practical point of view, I love that this does not need inflating so no messing about with that, it fixes securely to him very easily with no fuss and it dries off quickly after use. When you’re grappling with a couple of kids and we’re all trying to get ready in a small cubicle, these factors really count!

It’s early days, as he’s been swimming twice now with his SwimFin. At this stage I can say that he has been very excited about the whole adventure as he’s keen to use his SwimFin and he is very happy playing in the water, ducking underneath and playing in the pool. He loves having his SwimFin on and is very proud of it, and the toys all have to come with us each time, too, though he’s yet to use them as the pool we’ve been to provides toys at the splash sessions. So far I’d say that his SwimFin has been a real boost to his confidence in the water and I love how eager he is to grab it and set off for swimming. We will start teaching him a few basics after a couple more sessions as he does seem to be very at home in the water. So far, so good!

What do you think of SwimFin? Have you tried one?

  1. We had a SwimFin for Max and I loved it – as did he! It’s great for water confidence I think. Love the Funky Floaties too! Thanks for linking up with #TriedTested

  2. ooh I’ve been looking at these. Izzie (4) and Theo (2) have just started lessons and I want something for them when we go on holiday. I hate blowing up armbands. Maybe I’ll splash out and buy one 😉 #triedtested

  3. I have seen these before but I’ve not seen anyone using them in a pool yet. I think they are much better than armbands as like you said it gives them more freedom with their movements when learning to swim #triedtested

  4. We are in the process if just booking our holiday for this year and I am hoping to be able to get Monkey to swim by the end of it. He’s so close!! Something like this would be a great help. Love the toys too very bright and colourful! Popping by from #triedtested
