Superb Books for 7 Year Olds

Early last year I wrote Brilliant Books for 5 Year Olds Girls, where I shared some of my daughter’s favourite books and recommended reads. Well, my girl has now turned 7, so today I thought I’d take you through some superb books for 7 year olds.

Firstly, I would point you in the direction of that first post, as many of those books, particularly the non-fiction reads, are still being very much enjoyed here.

In addition to those, my little bookworm has now moved on to enjoying these series….

Fiction Books

Harry Potter by JK Rowling

It kind of goes without saying, right? It almost feels like a rite of passage to be introduced to JK Rowling’s world.

We are making our way through these books together at bedtimes. We took the kids to the Making of Harry Potter Studios Tour earlier this year which just further spurred on their love of all things wizarding, and needless to say, they already want to go back!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

Greg Heffley is the ‘wimpy kid’ and these books are fun, with illustrations scattered throughout the diary entries.

These are American, so it has introduced my daughter to various Americanisms and cultural references.

Roald Dahl books

Any of them. I loved these as a child and so far my girl has enjoyed Esio Trot, The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me and The BFG.

Julius Zebra by Gary Northfield

These are illustrated chapter books set in historical times, following Julius Zebra’s exploits. They’re action-packed and very funny.

Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown

A series of books about Stanley’s adventures and escapades now that he is ‘flat’!

Animal Ark books by Lucy Daniels

My daughter really enjoys animal stories, and we discovered these by stumbling across their Guinea Pigs in the Greenhouse title. They are sweet tales with an adventure running through them.

The Borrowers by Mary Norton

We have been reading this together, reading my copy from my own childhood. There is something so captivating about these tales and I am enjoying reading them as much as my daughter!

The Never Girls Collection by Kiki Thorpe

These are tales of girls transported to Pixie Hollow and the adventures that ensue.

Mango & Bambang by Polly Faber

The adventures of a little girl and a tapir, beautifully illustrated – I like tapirs so I adore these, too!

Winnie Shapes up by Laura Owen

This was the first of the Winnie books that my girl read and she’s since read more, telling me that they are very funny.

Non-Fiction Books

As to non-fiction, Boo has recently received The Great Grammar Book and The Terrific Times Tables Book and both get a huge thumbs up from her.

They are interactive, fun, bright and of course, educational. They are a great way of breathing life into quite dry subjects.

Now, being a child of mine, I might also be encouraging an interest in history! As such, she loves the Horrible Histories Books and for a more in depth view of world history in bite-size chunks, she likes What Happened When in the World.

Then she has her atlas and dictionary, along with a science encyclopedia, all of which she likes to dip into, and those Usborne books I mentioned in the previous post are endlessly fascinating to both of my kids.

What about your 7 year olds? What do they like to read?

  1. I’m interested to see Wimpy Kid on your list. I thought that the books were for older children. Maybe I should check them out!

My daughter absolutely loves Dotty Detective by Clara Vulliamy, there are three books already printed and a fourth coming out in the summer.
