A Sleepover at Warwick Castle

Last week we had a sleepover at Warwick Castle, staying in a Woodland Lodge in their Knight’s Village.

welcome to Knight's Village

We checked in after a fun afternoon at Warwick Castle, wandering round and taking in the birds of prey show, Horrible Histories and Wars of the Roses Live. I wrote earlier this month about all the reasons I think you should visit Warwick Castle and how much we enjoy our days out there, so do check that out for more details on the castle. We watched all of the shows again and I even managed to squeeze in a solitary trip to the State Rooms so that I could actually read everything and soak it all in, whilst the Husband and the kids climbed up the towers. We were all happy! As the curtain fell on the Horrible Histories show, we meandered through the grounds to Knight’s Village and checked in. Staying there over night managed to take the experience to another level.

It would be fair to say at this point that the kids were excited, VERY excited. We stayed in a Woodland Lodge, and it was just perfect, set in idyllic surroundings. The lodges are semi detached, and as there was no-one staying next door to us, I can’t comment on how thick the walls are or how soundproofed they are, all I know is that we were all very comfortable in there.

We had a double bed, bunk beds in a separate room (Boo now wants her own bunk bed, it has started something!), and then a wet room with toilet. Toiletries, towels, linen, hair dryer, cable TV, tea and coffee making facilities are all supplied, along with heating if you’re staying in the colder months. The children did not want to leave, it was that lovely!

There’s a priority entrance gate into the castle grounds and car parking is near to the Knight’s Village which was much appreciated as parking at the castle is a fair old walk to the castle itself so it was nice to have it a little easier. Staff were all friendly, the check in process straightforward and we were able to book slots for our evening meal and breakfast at that point, too.

There’s a medieval evening banquet available at the on-site dining hall, with child friendly buffet service, meaning the kids could eat without a long wait and could pick and choose from a good selection. There’s a salad bar and soup to start and then three counters full of hot food to choose from. Between Little Man and Boo they tried the chicken goujons, fish fingers, meatballs and pasta, as well as chips, beans and vegetables and all went down well. The Husband and I tried the pork and cod, and both were very good. Drinks and desserts were included and yes, we made the most of the option to try out several desserts, and by several, I mean all of them! Little Man really liked the frozen yoghurt machine with toppings bar.

We ate in the same room for breakfast the following day, and again the food was tasty and hot with a great selection. From fruit and cereals to pastries, waffles and pancakes to a full cooked breakfast, there was plenty to choose from. We went in at around 8am and it was fairly quite in there then but definitely busying up as we left around half an hour later.

The evening entertainment was a real highlight for us. Everyone converged down in front of the lodges and tents near the river for various activities. It had a really family friendly atmosphere there, with parents relaxing and looking on as the children enjoyed themselves. Boo had fun learning circus skills, and Little Man tells me his favourite thing was the archery. They also participated in a knights school learning how to wield a sword which ended in them each being knighted individually, which was a lovely touch. There were also three sword fights on throughout the evening, with much shouting and support from the crowd!

Overall, we had a brilliant time at Knight’s Village. The accommodation was lovely and felt almost magical, and the entertainment set the perfect tone for our evening. Staying at a castle steeped in history was always going to be special to me, but it was the children’s excitement about the lodge and all of the activities that really set this one apart for me, as they were completely immersed in it all. We loved it, could this be a break you’d enjoy?
