Project Garden Update 9/1/14

I thought it was about time I wrote an update on Project Garden. Truth be told, there’s been very little activity out there for the past few weeks, as the weather hasn’t really tempted me out. And people keep going on about a cold snap coming our way, so I’m loathe to buy new plants for fear of losing them if I can’t get them into the ground.

So this is the sad, soggy looking garden as it stands today…

Next on the jobs list are the sheds. We currently have 2 side by side (they’re at the back there), but we only need one, so I want to free up the space. I need to cut the clematis growing over it right back, so that I can then move it to the shed behind it. Then that mound of earth it front of it (which was the rockery) will be spread out across the plot to make a huge area for my cut-flower patch – very excited to get going on that!

I’m also going to create a little play area on the deck to entertain the kids in spring. The trampoline is there now, I’ll move the playhouse back up and we’ve a big play kitchen, currently in their playroom, that I’m going to put out there to make a ‘super’ mud pie kitchen! It’s wooden, so will probably only last until autumn, but it takes up lots of space inside, and I think being out there will give it a new lease of life and the children will be interested in it again.

Now, regular readers will know that I have no money for Project Garden! I’m trying to raise funds along the way. I sold all of Boo’s aged 3-4 clothes just before Christmas, along with a few toys, so have managed to add some cash to the pot. I had some David Austin vouchers from my aunt for Christmas, so I’ll be getting myself another rose soon – at what point do I say I have enough roses?! My mum also bought me a fabulous Complete Gardener book and some new secateurs. Is she trying to tell me that I now need to go it alone? No, no, I need her!

I do feel like it’s progressing, though, and I’ve been surprised by my continued interest in it, to be perfectly honest. I still look out there, planning and picturing, and pinning 😉 Here are a few pins over on my Project Garden pinboard..

  1. Fabulous photos Jocelyn, just love them – pretty sure I follow you on Pinterest but I will double check! Great to get an update on your Project Garden, you’re way ahead of us with your plans. The mud pie kitchen will be awesome, they’ll love that 🙂

  2. Ooo love the Pinterest board – what a cool way of finding new ideas and keeping them in one place!
With the sheds cutting back to one might be a grand idea – in the past I’ve found I accumulate ‘stuff’ as to the storage room we have! My garden is looking very sorry for itself at the moment – I too have grand plans and not the funds, I’ll take a leaf out of your book I think!

Thanks for joining in and sharing again x

    1. I love my Pinterest boards, and such an easy way to gather my ideas together. Yes, I suspect I’ll find all manner of junk in the sheds – all part of the fun?! Thanks for hosting x

  3. Nice pins! 🙂 Your garden looks happier than ours-I was out in ours a while ago and slipped on the mud that should be grass, eugh. Never mind, we’ll dry out eventually. Good luck with the project.

  4. I love the idea of a cut-flower patch, I would love one of those! I suppose we should start thinking about planning our garden soon (it’s just a wild mess of grass and fences at the moment)! I took a look at the David Austin catalogue last summer… I don’t think you can ever have enough roses! x

    1. No, you’re right – I’m sure to add a few more to my garden this year. Love roses! You should do a cut flower patch then. Very easy, just section off a little plot to do it on and then sprinkle those seeds 🙂

  5. I adored reading this, we are in a similar position with our garden so I’m really looking forward to hearing how you get on. I love the mud pie kitchen, I was pinning some crazy complicated mud pie kitchens this week but I’m yet to see if toddler will be able to do it without trying to eat the mud! And thank you for introducing me to Higgidy Garden, they look awesome. For cheap veg seeds you can try the real seed company, I thought they were really reasonable and do a special shipping rate for those with low wages etc.

    1. Thank you so much. Loving your pins, too. We can watch each other’s plans unfold 🙂 And thanks for the seeds tip, too – will definitely take a look x

  6. If you are specific about what you want, I bet you could get a whole garden from hand-me-downs. Maybe asking at your local gardening club. I find that many serious gardeners enjoy the process of propagating, planting, and tending so much, but they don’t have space for everything. Many enjoy giving things away. Just a thought:-) I’m all for the mud kitchen idea. Our kiddies couldn’t get enough of it last summer. I had to reshift some soil as their fav digging spot was going under next door’s fence!

    1. My mum very handily cultivates pretty much everything I want for me! We had a small mud kitchen area last summer that Boo adored, so I think they’ll be so excited by this idea!

  7. We’re working on our garden at the moment (well we have been for about a year and a half). I think though that is what I need to buy next for my flower border: a rose.

  8. We did our garden this year, but didn’t get round to doing the plants, that’s this years job now. Your garden looks like a lovely blank canvas with loads of opportunity. Fantastic space for the kids.
I might have to pinch some of you pins too. x

  9. I love the idea of creating a mud pie kitchen – although I don’t think I’d be allowed by my other half to do that! And getting rid of the spare shed is a good idea before it gets filled with all sorts of rubbish and then becomes essential (not that I’m speaking from experience here, you understand!). Winter is the perfect time for planning your garden I think and creating big dreams for it. Good luck! x

    1. Oh, just create one anyway! We did one on a small scale last summer, with just a few little pots on a wall – Boo loved it! Thanks very much – I’ll certainly report back on progress x
