Our First Visit to Legoland

As part of our Sun holiday to Hoburne Cotswold, we decided as we were closer to Windsor than our house is, to go to Legoland. Cue much excitement in our house – and Boo was pretty happy about it, too! Now, being thrifty,  I logged into my Tesco clubcard account, and discovered that for a limited time, Legoland tickets could be bought with just £8.50 of clubcard vouchers – brilliant! So we were booked & ready for Legoland, for free!!

We chose to go on a Tuesday, late June, as the weather looked good that day, and mid week seemed better as it’d be a little less busy. On arrival, we saw signs for car park costs – priority £8 & standard £3. Now as we arrived within half an hour of the park opening, and it was midweek, we parked standard and were basically the other side of a hedge to the £8 car park – pleased we didn’t upgrade on this occasion! I do think it’s good to have this option, but we really didn’t need it in our case, so be aware of that if you go.

A short walk from our car and we were in! Our printed tickets meant we bypassed the queues and went straight through. And our fun-packed and fortunately sunny day began.

We first made out way down to Miniland, which is loads of Lego ‘model villages’, though it was actually scenes from nations represented from across the world. I always enjoy a model village, and this was absolutely spectacular. At the edge of Miniland, week-long Brickfest was on, so Boo spent a little time colouring in (she absolutely loves colouring and drawing, which is lovely, but I was aware that we had the whole of Legoland ready and waiting for us and she was sitting there crayoning for quite some time!), and then playing with Lego Friends sets. I did enjoy this (I always loved building little houses with pretty trees and flowers in the gardens when I was little, while my younger brother was creating a pneumatic JCB, which may have been a  little more technically demanding…not as cute, though…), and I’d had my eye on these sets for her so it was a chance to test them out. I think as they do give a guide age of 5-6+, she is a little young for it, and I’d be nervous of having all of the small pieces around with Little Man, too. But it’ll definitely be on the gift list for her 5th birthday.

We then meandered to Duplo valley. Wow, this was a lot of fun! The main attraction here for Boo was Brickville, the huge adventure playground. She would, without doubt, have been content to stay in here all day long. Next to this was the new Splash Safari and Drench Towers. We simply didn’t have time to go in here, too, but it looked brilliant, and will be on our agenda for our next time. We will remember to take towels, though they can be bought in the shop right next to it all.

We ate at the new Duplo family buffet restaurant, nearby. I went for this as Little Man feeds himself (we did our best to clean up after him!) so it’s nice to offer him a selection, and being a buffet it was immediate food so no wasting time on lunch! Boo is also going through a fussy stage (having always been a brilliant eater) so I knew this way she’d at least eat something from the selection. It was £11.95 per adult and our children were free – under 3’s. There was soup & bread, a salad bar and a good selection of hot food – mashed potato, vegetables, gammon, lasagne, chips, fish fingers, rice, baked beans, sausages – you get the idea! And also free drinks. It was clean, the food was hot and the staff were friendly. I’d have liked to have seen a better drinks selection – lots of fizzy pop, but as my kids drink water or a little squash, this was not much use to us, and I was surprised to see no dessert section. Just a range of fruit and yoghurts would have been a great addition, I think.

So then fuelled up, we were off again! The park is made up of lots of lands, such as Pirates Landing, Knights Kingdom, Land of the Vikings and so on, so armed with map, we explored.  Boo loves rides, and having been to Thomasland and Peppa Pig World before, I’d have to say this was the best for her as she could go on pretty much everything. It’s designed for littlies, so I didn’t have to say ‘no’ as the begged to go on roller coasters that she was too small for! (That said, we still LOVE Thomasland, as it’s much more than rides, with it’s zoo, dino trail, play areas etc.). Her favourite was probably The Dragon roller coaster, and she also loved the L-Driving School, Pirate Training Camp and Squid Surfer (the husband liked this one, too – quite fast and very wet!). I got her on the pirate ship, as I get pretty motion sick on most rides, but I do love a pirate ship, so had a little go on that one! Little Man also experienced his first ride, on a carousel.

The husband and I really enjoyed the Star Wars exhibition, though the children have yet to see those films so that one was just for us! It has all of the main planets, the main characters, scenes from the films and moving exhibits including a levitating Millenium Falcon that lights up – imagine our excitement!

We stayed until the park closed at 5pm, and though that then meant we queued in traffic to get out, it was well worth staying there for every minute, and we’re already talking about when to go back again 🙂
