My Desert Island Discs

desert island discsI’ve been tagged by YouBabyMeMummy to share my 8 Desert Island Discs. No easy task.

As a teen, I was all about music. My best friend and I would be up early every Wednesday, even in the school holidays, desperate to get to the newsagents and get our copies of the NME and Melody Maker. We read every story, lived for the next gig we could go to, and would always have one to look forward to. Festivals were the pinnacle, and I vividly remember one summer, we couldn’t afford to get to one, so we recreated our own in my mate’s back garden. Music playing, beer and cider left out in the sun to warm, tent on the lawn, we had a laugh! I mocked poor pop-loving types, and their awful, commercial (happy – I see that now..!), music.

As I’ve got older, my music taste has become, erm, more ‘diverse’, or perhaps ‘eclectic’? I’ll delightedly sing along to the latest One Direction songs, enjoy a few classical pieces, and I so love my musicals!  But, if I have to choose just a handful of tracks and albums to put a smile on my face, I’ll tend to veer towards old classics. As you’ll now see…

Piano Man by Billy Joel

We saw him in concert a couple of months back – brilliant. Just a legend. I struggled to choose a favourite of his as I’ve so many, but you can’t go wrong with Piano Man.

Whatever by Oasis

I was not really into the Blur versus Oasis thing in the 90’s, as I really liked them both at the time. But this one, with it’s beautiful violins, gets me every time, and instantly transports me back to being 17 again.

Your Song by Elton John

Again, struggled to choose just one, as he has had a fair few hits. We saw him play in Vegas, which was a great experience and one I’m sure I’ll never forget. I sing this song to Boo most nights, and have done since she was a day old, so it feels special.

Don’t Let Me Down Gently by The Wonder Stuff

OK, this is my youth. LOVED The Wonder Stuff. Went to lots of their gigs, including their last at Phoenix Festival, though they’ve since reformed, of course. Oh, those were the days…!

Son of A Preacher Man by Dusty Springfield

She’s just so fabulous. Her songs get me singing at the top of my voice, and I love You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me for a good old singalong!

Blackbird by The Beatles

I couldn’t miss The Beatles off the list, but choosing just one song from their archives isn’t easy! I’ve always enjoyed this track, though, and loved seeing McCartney sing it live in concert. My parents didn’t play loads of Beatles music to me when I was young (my mum loved the likes of Hendrix and the Small Faces, whereas my Dad leant more towards Elkie Brooks and The Andrews Sisters – you see where my eclectic tastes may have developed?!), but I ‘discovered’ them as a teen, as I’m sure everyone does with legends like this.

Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson

An amazing artist and a brilliant track. I remember when I was little, and my friends were loving Bros and boy bands, I just loved Jackson’s stuff. I had Thriller on tape and Bad on vinyl 😉

We Are Young by Fun

OK, I felt like there needed to be at least one track from this century! And I do really enjoy this one. It has a real ‘anthem’ feel about it, and I love the drums.

Would any of these make it to your list? I’ll tag just 3 bloggers, as I’ve been doing a fair bit of tagging lately! So,

  1. Great choice! Makes me want to put shuffle on a suitable playlist on spotify! You have very similar tastes to me. Mine would have to include She’s Electric by Oasis, Wake up Boo by Boo Radleys & Black Dog by The Manics ( in fact the whole This is my truth album…)

    1. It took me ages to do this! I came up with 5/6 straightaway, but then struggled to narrow down for the final ones. Fun to do, though 🙂

  2. Nice selection of tunes… I would definitely have a bit of the Beatles, Oasis and Blur in my list, too… add in U2, AC DC and the Foo Fighters, and I am a happy lady! These days, I also find Mozart quite relaxing when I am working and having to focus (funny how your musical taste changes once you leap into your thirties!). x Mel
