What the Ladybird Heard Live!

Yesterday we were fortunate to be invited along to Birmingham Town Hall to see What the Ladybird Heard Live! We are big Julia Donaldson fans here and I have so many happy memories of reading this one to Boo over and over and over again so we were all very excited about the show.

Two crafty robbers, one tiny ladybird, and a whole farmyard of fun! Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len have a cunning plan to steal the farmer’s fine prize cow. But they reckon without the tiniest, quietest creature of all: The Ladybird has a plan of her own!

First up, as parents, here are a few things that are useful to know:

– the show started promptly, so no worries over entertaining little ones for longer than you anticipate

– the lights go down very gradually at the start so it’s not at all scary

– we had seats up in the circle and could all easily see the whole show

– it lasts for one hour, with no intermission

– there aren’t people trying to sell you programmes and random merchandise everywhere, so you will be safe!

– there are plenty of toilets, well-signed, just outside the auditorium for quick dashes!

So that’s the basics covered, how about the show itself? We all loved it. I couldn’t take any photos that did it any justice, so please do take a look to get a feel for it…

I was wondering how they would turn the story into a stage show for a full hour, yet they did and it all made perfect sense whilst staying true to the book. The cast were fabulous, the way that they created the animals ingenious and the songs were all so catchy. The highlight was spotting that clever little ladybird as she first made her tentative and eagerly anticipated appearance, we all loved that!

There was plenty of audience participation with the kids all getting involved shouting out suggestions. My two are 7 and 4 and they understood all of this, along with the story, so were fully participating. Boo was enraptured throughout, barely taking her eyes from the stage. Little Man was more fidgety, but every time he started getting distracted the show drew him back in with a song or the chance to shout out.  Both the Husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it, too, and we’ve all been animatedly telling people all about it.

What the Ladybird Heard is showing now until Wednesday 11th January 2017, pop over to the website for more details.

Would your children enjoy this?
