So last Summer, I decided that I wanted to try my hand at knitting, baking and gardening. Yep, I decided to take on 3 new hobbies all at once, oh, as well, as this being the time that I started blogging and my letter writing – I like to be busy! I’ve amazed myself at how I’ve actually stuck with most of these things, as I am self-aware enough to know that I can get a little impatient and distracted, and don’t always see things through. The baking is sporadic, but I have a couple of firm favourite recipes now, and I like to try new ones from time to time. My gardening is actually something that I’m becoming quite passionate about, as you’ll know, if you read my Project Garden posts. The blogging, well, you can see that I’ve stuck at that, and I still write plenty of letters weekly. So only one thing has fallen by the wayside, and that’s my knitting. Now, I’m not saying it’s full on been abandoned, more shelved! But, I got to thinking about how else I could create, and get faster results – me being the impatient type and all. And so it is that I turn to sewing…
This is a scary one. Probably not for most normal people, but given that I managed to break my mum’s sewing machine by barely even touching it, and have awful recollections of having to make a a puppet’s dress in Design & Technology at school, I’m a little bit scarred. But, as I’m about to turn 37, surely I can put these teenage experiences behind me, and try again?
Well, we will see, won’t we? I’m going to have a go on my mum’s machine (yes, she’s acceded to allow me near it once more) and see whether it’s something that I think I could take to. I like the idea of making a few bits for the home, and some dressing up clothes for the kids, so nothing major and not overly ambitious. And then if it goes well, I might actually get my own machine, but that’s a step too far right now. I need to concentrate on not breaking my mum’s….
How about you? Do you sew?
In a fit of ‘trying something new’ I bought a sewing machine a couple of years ago but I haven’t been very good at using it. I went on a short course at our local craft place and have made a few things. But this year it’s mostly been in the spare room gathering dust…… Good luck with your projects though!
Mm, that’s what bothers me about getting one, too! Might just use my mum’s until I’m into the swing of it. As long as I don’t break it!
I used my moms machine for a year until I was sure it was something I enjoyed. I then purchased my own and there’s been no stopping me since. Good luck x
That’s what I’m thinking I’ll do, too. Glad you’re enjoying it & thanks! X
Hi Jocelyn. You know that I have recently started sewing. I make mistakes, use my unpicker quite a lot but I have altered clothes my husband has bought, shortened work trousers for him but mostly love saying I made/did that! The sense of achievement is huge!
Yes, the sense of achievement must be great. Maybe l’ll manage something!
Good luck! I’d love to learn to sew… One day! x
Yep, one day..! X
We sound very similar. I love trying new things. I have a sewing machine, started to learn last summer. Good luck with it.
Ah, thanks very much. Hopefully it won’t be too disastrous!
Good luck! I love sewing but find setting everything up given my limited space at home puts me off doing a lot. I (re)learnt to knit earlier this year and it was slow going at first. However, I am now the proud owner of a pair of fingerless gloves and half-way through a tea cosy (not that exciting but still).
That’s very exciting – well done you!
Mr M bought me a sewing machine two years ago. I had brilliant intentions-but it’s still in the box!! Give me some inspiration Jocelyn, please!! 🙂 xx
This is what I think might happen to me! I will attempt to inspire 😉 x
What can I say?! Knowing you, you’ll embrace the challenge and be producing ball gowns this time next year. Look forward to reading and hearing all about it 🙂
I’ll be delighted with myself if I can fashion a bag or some such!
Ooh I really fancy trying my hand at sewing… Perhaps you can be my guinea pig!.. 😉
Ha ha – happy to be of service!
I’m big on sewing! One of biggest things I thank my Mum for teaching me. My favourite thing to make at the moment is cuddly toys from out baby clothes – our house has become overrun with them. Next up is some new cushion covers, whenever I can decide on some fabric. xo
That’s a lovely idea. Oh, and yes, cushions – I do like a nice cushion! X
I can do some tops and cullotes. Its been forever my wish to have my own sewing machine but I cant afford one sadly =(
Very clever of you. One day maybe x
I love sewing. I have about 4 projects on the go at the moment! And an embroidery project…and I bake! Proper 50s housewife, me
Go you! Yes, you see my mum can do it all, so I will at least be able to pick her brains!
Ooh good luck! I’ll be interested to see how you get on. I’m a bit the same – I really want to get to grips with crochet but I’m impatient too! I’d love to make some home made bunting or cushion covers or something – maybe sewing is the answer…
Yes, do it! We can bumble along and figure it out together!
