Is Handwriting Still Important?

How’s your handwriting? I know mine leaves a lot to be desired. I do write regularly, though, which I think helps, whether it be notes, plans, my bullet journal, or long snail mail letters. It means I don’t find the feel of a pen in my hand strange when I do put pen to paper, but I wonder how many of us do write this regularly in an age of texts and emails?

Uniball share that ‘according to the Institute of Education, the quality of handwriting education in primary schools can have a direct impact on success into secondary and higher education. Furthermore, the National Literacy Trust suggests that as many as 25% of UK adults are classed as ‘functionally illiterate’ with many struggling to write a birthday card or a cheque.’

It’s certainly important to get this right at a young age, and there’s plenty of help available out there for children and adults alike. Here are 5 top tips to improve your child’s handwriting…

5 Top Tips To Improve Your Childs Handwriting

I like how these tips are nice and simple to understand and easy to implement. My son’s just started in reception at school so is in the process of learning how to read and write. I’ll certainly be using these tips to support him.

My daughter’s on the cursive writing stage, working towards getting her ‘pen licence’ at school, meaning she can start writing in ink. As this infographic suggests, this is involving plenty of practice, and I am thinking I should join her and improve my handwriting, too.

How To Teach Cursive Handwriting To Children

Uniball also have some free handwriting worksheets available to download and print, so there’s lots of help available for children as they master this important fine motor skill, and they’re available for us adults to brush up on our skills.

  1. I think you know my handwriting Jocelyn! I have my moments where I am quite tidy and legible, mainly when I am writing on lined paper! However, the state of my writing will not stop me writing letters each week.

  2. I think handwriting is very important. I love handwritten letters!

If children don’t learn how to write, how will they ever read any historical documents.

I must admit, my handwriting isn’t the best, but I do try 🙂
