Fun at Monster Jam, Ricoh Arena

We were gifted tickets free of charge

On Saturday we drove over to Coventry’s Ricoh Arena to experience our very first monster trucks show, Monster Jam.

Monster Jam is a two hour monster trucks show, where the trucks perform a variety of stunts to the ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ of the crowd. Around halfway through there are also motorbikes and they were absolutely brilliant, we are still talking about the stunts that they managed to pull off. It is a day out for all the family as I’d say that the crowd was predominantly parents and their kids.

We really didn’t know what to expect, we were just all excited about going. We spotted some of the trucks outside the stadium as we arrived and the kids were awestruck, they really do look great. They are all designed to look fun and unique and they all have names; Grave Digger, Max-D, Wonder Woman, Monster Energy, El Toro Loco, Zombie, Megalodon and EarthShaker.

We got there just as it started and it was loud. And when I say loud, I mean really, really loud. Most kids had ear defenders and rightly so. This was a huge parenting fail on our part as we forgot them and the kids struggled initially with the noise levels. So my number one tip for attending Monster Jam, do get your kids some ear defenders. They had sold out by the time that we realised our error! I think it was probably also at its very loudest right at the start as two trucks were racing one another, whereas every other competition only had one truck moving at a time. Still very loud, but not double the noise!

Boo adjusted quite quickly, but Little Man took a little longer to warm up. But once he did, he loved it. The motorbike show completely wowed us all and then we all started to really get into the Monster Jam competition and shout for our favourites.

Monster Jam is a competition between each of the trucks and there are several rounds where they each have to perform certain stunts and they are then rated by the crowd. Points are awarded at the end of each round for the best performances and added to the overall leader-board.

We each had our favourites and it was fun cheering them on as they performed (mine won, by the way!) and we particularly enjoyed the penultimate and final rounds. Each monster truck had to perform the two-wheel challenge in the penultimate round which saw some amazing driving, and then the final round was two minutes of free-styling and some of the drivers really went for it!

These drivers are so skilled and really know how to put on a show. We were aware that the conditions can’t have been easy either, as we’d had so much rain prior to the show, though were lucky as it all dried up in time for it to begin. It was an experience unlike any other that we have had before, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon.

And how do I know that Monster Jam was a huge hit with my two? They were both saying on the way to school this morning that they are going to do Show & Tell about it today. That’s all the endorsement you need of a great outing, folks!
