Don’t Call Me Sweet by Smriti Prasadam-Halls – Review

We were recently sent a copy of a brand new picture book from Bloomsbury Publishing, about a little monster….

Don't Call Me SweetDon’t Call Me Sweet by Smriti Prasadam-Halls

‘I’m a giant monster, with sharp, sharp claws.
I’ve got big, spiky teeth and loud, loud roars.
Which is why I say, to everyone I meet . . .
CALL ME SCARY . . . DON’T CALL ME SWEET!

Everyone thinks that little monsters are cute and cuddly, but this monster’s grumpy and grouchy. Honest! He does REAL monster stuff, like stomping around and eating squishy, squelchy food like bug eye stew. He’s brave, too – he’s not scared of ANYTHING. Not even big, hairy ogres . . .

. . . Wait, is that a big, hairy ogre? HELP!’

Both of the children love this one. The story is fun, and they giggle at little monster. I’m not certain that they get the twist and little monster having a big about face at the end to suit his own purposes, though Boo might understand. It doesn’t detract from their enjoyment, though, as they simply love little monster. It’s the perfect length to hold Little Man’s attention (at 18 months old) and interest Boo, at 4. They like me reading this one to them together.

From my point of view, I think the story is fun, the illustrations striking and they make little monster so very endearing and, dare I say it, sweet?!

We reviewed I Love You Night & Day, by Smriti Prasadam-Halls a few months ago and continue to enjoy reading that one, too.

Don’t Call Me Sweet is out to buy 10th April 2014, and thanks to Bloomsbury Publishing for sending us a copy to review and enjoy.
