Disney Pictopia Review & Competition

Last week we were excited to receive Disney Pictopia….

Disney Pictopia

Families team up in this uniquely collaborative yet competitive trivia game with 1,000 questions covering the World of Disney! During the game, everyone gets a chance to show off their knowledge – from Disney Jr. and Disney XD to the Disney Parks and classic films. Players place wagers based on knowledge of those images, and then work together or on their own, to answer the question.

Game Play

We played this one with my family, all as individual players with the kids helping out. Little Man wasn’t entirely helpful, but Boo aged 6, could play along and got quite a lot of the answers correct.

Players all choose their Mickey ears playing piece and then we’re off. All questions are based on a set of four pictures, as you can see below. Players take it in turns to be the ‘host’ and ask the question pertaining to the place that their piece has landed on.

There are wager coins numbered 1-5 and at the start of each turn you need to wager how many moves you’d like to gain if you get the answer correct.

The first three options (pick one, two and three) are to be answered all as a collaborative group. The question is posed and all of the other players discuss it and need to then agree on a joint answer. If correct, they all move forward the number of spaces wagered.

There are then the questions that are to be played individually, and in order to answer these players use these cute little Mickey Mouse dials. As with the group questions, if you get the answer correct you move forward the number of spaces that you have wagered. In this way everyone makes their way around the board, along with the dice to move the host each time, until the first player to reach the castle is the winner.

We played this as a four-player game and it took us around half an hour or so, so an average playing time for a board game and just about the right length when playing with young children too.

The Verdict

We’re a Disney household, having seen many, many of the films as I’m sure most family households across the world have. This means that as well as being able to answer the questions, we also loved doing so. There are plenty of challenges in there as unless you know every single movie inside out, some characters or plot-lines will stump you. It’s a good balance of making you think a little and work some answers out through processes of elimination, along with knowing many of them so that you don’t feel you’re struggling!

The way that you team up to answer a lot of the questions is very different to most board games and it makes you think about the way that you play the game a little differently. There’s quite a few different aspects to it, it’s not just answering the questions as you have the strategy of the wagers involved too. The first time we played it, we found ourselves concentrating more on these different aspects than on the game itself, but after a couple of goes, it flows more easily and it’s then just all about the pictures, the questions and the fun!
