Brilliant Books for 5 Year Old Girls

Today I am talking about brilliant books for 5 year old girls.

Now that my daughter is 5 and in Reception, her reading has really taken off. I’ve always been a reader, so I’m keen to encourage her enthusiasm and keep her well-supplied with lots of enjoyable children’s books.

We’re fortunate to have a lovely library near us, some great bookshops in town and plenty of charity shops which are often great for finding a new chapter book in.

Though Boo still enjoys picture books, particularly when she can read them to her little brother, we’ve moved onto the wonderful world of chapter books.

I’m as excited as she is by this development! So today I thought that I’d share some of her favourites, which may also form a handy guide to those new to chapter books.

Fiction Book Recommendations for 5 Year Olds

From classics to more contemporary reads, there are so many fabulous books out there, but these are our top ten picks.

They’re in no particular order, and if you click on any of them they will take you through to Amazon to read more about them, check out the reviews and buy if you like the look of them for your child.

1. The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy

2. Charlotte’s Web by EB White

3. Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild

4. Anything at all by Roald Dahl. Anything, they’re all great. We have started with Esio Trot and The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me, and we’ll be working our way through them all, just as I did. The BFG is my favourite.

5.The Famous Five books by Enid Blyton

6. The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton

7. The Magic Ballerina series by Darcey Bussell

8. Mrs Pepperpot stories by Alf Proysen

9. The Magic Kitten series by Sue Bentley

10. The Rainbow Fairies books by Daisy Meadows. There are over 100 of these, so plenty to keep her going with!

I’d also pop in a special mention here for her Storytime magazine subscription, too. We reviewed Storytime last year, and as a result of trying it, we took out a subscription to it.

It’s a treat for Boo in the post every month, and has a great mix of folklore, fables and myths, which we enjoy getting lost in together.

The Usborne See Inside Books

Boo cannot get enough of these books, and I can absolutely see why. I love buying them for her, and we enjoy going through them all together.

They are teaching her so much, prompting so many questions and are fun to read with the lift-the-flaps, too.

There are lots of them in the series, and as you can see, we’ve got 6 so far and I imagine we’ll have them all at some point. It will be a nice to have the collection to refer back to over the years and to pass onto her little brother.

We both highly recommend these.

What do you think? Have you read any of these? I would love to hear what your little ones are enjoying reading, too.

  1. My six-year-old loves chapter books now too, it’s great isn’t it? He also now has his own reading lamp for reading on his own for a bit after lights out. We love RD books too. I would also recommend the original Paddington chapter books and the Womble books. We’ve tried some of the Edwardian classics too – but some of them are not translating particularly well… they can be a bit convoluted and the cultural references are quite confusing Famous Five is just about ok. I used to love Dick King Smith books – I think we’ll try some of those soon x

    1. I’m loving it! Ah, I do like the idea of his own little lamp, too, very sweet. Great, thanks so much for these recommendations. We’ve enjoyed Paddington picture books, I hadn’t realised there are chapter books, too. I like The Wombles, so will try those, too. I know what you mean about the translation, though they do make for talking points! X

  2. Oh my days Jocelyn. Your Boo and Our Little Bear sound like peas in a pod!! For our bear has just gone up a stage in her reading and just can’t get enough of books. She absolutely loves the Rainbow Magic series. In fact I’ve just blogged about ‘Just her and her book’ and she’s reading a Daisy Meadows book in that very picture! Yes the reading journey with our bear has now taken us to chapter books and she can be heard reading a book to her teddies each night for a few minutes at bedtime by the light of her Peppa Pig torch! It fills you with so much fuzziness, doesn’t it?!

    1. Oh yes, I love listening to her, and she grabs a book so often now, and just settles in to read. She loves to read to Little Man, too, which is very sweet x

  3. I think Usbourne books are so brilliant and what a great selection. I may get a few of these for the smalls. Thank you so much for sharing with this week’s #pinitparty. I have pinned.
