4 Signs You’re Not Suited For A Life Behind A Desk

This is a collaborative post

If you have recently left university, finished a degree or even grown tired of your current career, you might be left wondering, what should be next? Where do you go from here? What can you do and what direction should you take? It’s true to say that most jobs on the market require office work. Here you’ll be sitting at a desk and you’ll typically be staring at a computer screen for hours on end. You will also be fixed to a specific period on a nine to five shift. This doesn’t provide a lot of flexibility when deciding how you want to live your life both professionally and socially.

Despite the fact that there are an abundance of jobs where you will be working in an office, there are other possibilities too. You need to consider whether an office job might not be the best choice for you. If you’re not suited for this type of work it will quickly become tiring, monotonous and essentially a drain on your life. But how do you know if you’re not suited for this type of work? Here are some of the signs to watch for as well as other possibilities that could suit you more.

You Hate Staying Still

It’s quite possible that you are more active than someone who would be happy sitting behind a desk all day. What does this mean? Well, consider for instance whether you’re the type of person that can sit on the sofa through the weekend watching TV. If you’re happy doing this then there’s no reason why your work couldn’t be a similar situation behind a desk. However, if you are love going out at the weekend, perhaps, travelling and exploring the outdoors then this should certainly be incorporated into your career. There are actually plenty of ways to do that. For instance, one option would be to work to become a personal trainer.

If you love fitness and are never happier than when you are working out, this is a fantastic choice. By becoming a PT you can run your own small business set up and make quite a lot of money along the way. Every day that you go to work, you’ll be able to stay active and energized rather than sitting in one place for hours on end.

Alternatively, it’s possible that you just love working with your hands. You can’t really do this if you are working behind a desk and it might not fulfill you the way that you would have hoped. Instead, then, why not consider a job where you can be more hands-on such as manufacturing. You might think that manufacturing will mean lower prospects and issues with problems such as pay. However, that won’t be the case, particularly if you make sure that you get a manufacturing degree online. With a degree like this, you can move forward in this industry, test your skills and flex your creative muscle.

You Hate Working Within Time Constraints

You might despise working in a structured environment. This means that you will have to start work at a certain time each working day and leave at a fixed time. As well as this, you will have to complete goals within particular deadlines which can be stressful and even cause anxiety. For a lot of people, this can make work an absolute nightmare because they are constantly working towards a particular fixed set of goals. These will be chosen by your floor manager or even your main employer.

If you want to avoid this type of situation, then you should consider working for yourself. Blogging could be one choice that suits this need. With blogging, you can choose when you work, when you don’t and how much you want to earn. Essentially, you will become your own boss and work to your own specific schedule or needs. If you don’t do well in highly structured environments, this is your best choice.

It’s not just blogging of course. Any role where you can freelance could meet this need. Consider what skills you have and how you could use them to offer a particular service. For instance, you might have excellent organizational skills. If that’s the case, you could operate as a virtual receptionist. These days, it’s quite common for companies to hire receptionists outside of the typical office environment. You’ll complete the same job but you won’t have to worry about being tied down to a particular employer or client.

You’re Not Interested In Office Politics

Do you hate the idea of office politics? Are you disinterested in what people could be gossiping about at the water cooler? If you’re tired of all the little details that shouldn’t be part of the office environment but almost always are, then perhaps it’s worth avoiding this type of set up completely.

Regardless of whether you decide to run your own company, freelance or remain self-employed, you will be able to avoid this type of issue completely. Even if you run your own company, you will be able to decide how many employees you want to hire or if you want to run your company solo. If you decide on a solo company, then you will need to make sure that you are using outsourcing services. With outsourcing solutions, you can still get the services you need to run and manage your business effectively. But you won’t have to worry about the extra responsibilities that come with managing a workforce.

As well as this, you’ll find the days start to repeat themselves. If you don’t think this type of situation will be right for you, then you do need to make sure that you escape the office.
