Word of the Week 1/7/16

Hello and welcome to Word of the Week!

If you’re new here, Word of the Week is a nice and simple weekly linky, with everyone welcome to pop by and share. You reflect back on the past week and sum it up in one word. Then share your word with us in a blog post, with as little or as much explanation as you like. It’s a fun and friendly linky, so please do be lovely and visit as many of the other blogs as you can and share with them your thoughts on their words and weeks. I do comment on every entry to the linky, and if you add the Word of the Week badge to your post to help spread the ‘word’, I also tweet them out.

My word of the week this week is:

Brexit

What else?

How strange to be choosing a word this week that is so new to us, and yet so universally understood.

What a week, where to start? Without doubt Brexit has dominated my week, as I’m sure it has all over the UK. I can’t remember a time when we were all talking politics as much as we are now, which can be positive, but then I also can’t remember a time when we’ve been as divided over it, as openly hostile over it. And though I am very disappointed in the result, it’s the divisions that it’s caused, the bigotry and hatred spewing forth that has most appalled me.

Remain or Leave, this is one where we’ll need to pull together, but as I’m not seeing that from our politicians, and social media being what it is along with the press further exacerbating the divisions, I’m yet to see signs of that happening. We will get there, we must get there.

On a more positive note, perhaps the next generation do have what it takes to pick us all back up. When my 6 year old picked up on a conversation we were having, I found myself attempting to explain racism to her in as simple terms as I could. It is a difficult concept for a child with friends from different races and cultures to grasp, I gratefully found. Made all the more clear when she responded with ‘But they’re all just people.’ You’re right, my girl, you’re right. She gives me hope.

What about you? What one word sums up your week best?

Please grab the badge, link up and share.

  1. Brexit could have easily been my choice of word this week – the result has really dominated my thoughts and like you, I’m both disappointed by the result and appalled by the hatred it has generated. I agree that we need to pull together and move forward – I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing some signs that our politicians might be prepared to do the same! I love Boo’s response to you trying to explain racism to her – we are all just people and if this is the attitude of the future generation, we’ll be ok. Thanks for hosting #WotW

  2. I totally agree with you. This is now a time to pull together not push further apart and we will get there eventually, we simply have too. I just hope the next generation all see things as simply as your daughter. Bless her! I am going to try and link up for the first time today as a newbie blogger 🙂

  3. I am not a voter here but one thing that I had notice while the campaign is going on is how much fear the candidates are instilling on people. And if you planted fear that is what you will sow me thinks. It is scary for me to go out lately as though no one is doing bad things to me in my head I am thinking I am not that welcome as I thought I am.

    1. You are welcome. There were always people like this, they’ve just decided to come out of the woodwork at the moment, and I hope the rest of the UK unites against them x

  4. Brexit is certainly what’s on everybody’s minds, my kids were really quite upset at the result despite being so young. They had their own referendum at school and the overwhelming majority decided to stay, so they were really upset with the result. It is a time for things to change though, we need to get on with it and I hope we get a good strong leader to do it.

  5. Yes, I think Brexit has definitely been a big thing this week. These issues are difficult for the children to grasp. We tried explaining some of the issues to my son, but not sure how much he understood.

  6. Your daughter sounds amazing. Lovely way of looking at everything. I’m really disappointed with the result and even more saddened by the hatred. Let’s just sit back and ride it I say…we will get through. Thanks for hosting xx

  8. It is disgusting how vile people have been over the whole situation.
Your girl is so right….We are all just people. If only the rest of the world could see it like like….

  9. I’m afraid I’m bored with Brexit now, but I hope your week has been a good one aside from that and hope you have a good weekend.

  10. I’m so disappointed in the result and even more disappointed in the behaviour that followed the result, I have purposely avoided the news this week and hidden any idiotic social media postings, the referendum really has brought out the worst in people and I’m hoping it can only get better from here as I believe the majority of fellow humans are good and kind it’s just the ones who aren’t that are given the most space in the media sadly. #WotW

  11. Brexit really has dominated all of our lives this week hasn’t it? I’ve also been saddened by all of the hatred on social media this week. We all need to put our weapons down and get on with it now, don’t we?

  12. It has definately been a very interesting week retarding politics. But what is more shocking is some people’s attitudes! I totally agree regardless of whether you are in or out we should stick together X #wotw

  13. The elections happened the day after I came out of hospital. Despite my hubby’s pleas to go and vote I didn’t feel up to it and was in two minds over it all.Pleased to hear your daughter makes sense and gives us hope for the future. For some reason I’m reminded of the poem ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling. Thanks for hosting #WotW

  14. It has been a tricky one – a nation of people usually quiet and refined when it comes to expressing political views has suddenly become vocal in the extreme, and as you say, quite aggressive with it at times. It’s a sorry state. Then again, I think the country was in a pretty sorry state anyway. Let’s give it to innocent 6-year olds who have such clear and untainted views like your daughter. Thanks for hosting #WotW

  15. Gosh I literally have tried to avoid it at all costs, I could of cried Friday at the way everyone on both sides were reacting. What we need is to work as one no matter what the result, 2 of my friends who are sisters fell out online over it, it got so heated and normally they are so close! It really upset me that Brexit could cause that. I was so relieved to go away to a country lodge and forget about it.
