SSE: The Energy Behind Women’s Football

Today I’m sharing more about SSE’s commitment to women’s football, at all levels of the game.

As a parent, I am keen that my children get chances to try new things, experience different clubs and challenge themselves with different sports. I want to give them access to as many different possible hobbies, skills, and ultimately passions, as I possibly can. And then once they find those favourite pastimes, we will be right here supporting them every step of the way.

Living in England, I can’t help but suspect that at some stage, that hobby will be football. It’s been a lifelong love for my husband, he was always kicking a ball about as a child and I actually met him through football as he played for a team alongside some friends of mine. He is keen for the children to develop the same passion for the game and I know that with the warmer months and longer days on their way, he’ll soon be out in the garden playing football with them most evenings. They both love it, though I’d say at this stage, it’s my daughter that shows more interest. Which is why I can completely get behind SSE and their Energy Behind Women’s Football campaign, as they support girls and women in football at all levels, believing that everyone deserves the same opportunities, regardless of gender.

Their latest film features three separate stories playing out in parallel across one day – the day of a football match at Wembley. Each of these stories shows the shared experiences of girls involved in the game from grassroots to elite. Despite all these stories taking place at different levels of the game, they are all brought together by football, showing the power of the game and the opportunities it provides women, at every level, to get involved.

I like the hope and energy, all wrapped up in friendship and hard work, that the film conveys. It really does make you think of football as ‘the beautiful game.’

The recent launch of SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Clubs will provide girls aged 5-11 with regular opportunities to play football and take part in organised sessions in a fun and engaging environment created exclusively for girls. SSE continue to show their commitment to increasing participation in the women’s game through this new initiative. The clubs will run from spring through summer on a weekly basis and aim to provide a fun and safe space for girls to learn the game and make friends.

As part of their support, SSE have given over 1000 girls the chance to kick a ball and enjoy the beautiful game for the first time and at the SSE Women’s FA Cup Final, their ‘kids go free’ ticket offer has made the pinnacle of the game even more accessible to all. SSE is one of the UK’s leading energy companies, supplying energy to around 8.21 million customers throughout Great Britain and Ireland, and then giving energy to women’s football.

Time will tell whether this is a sport that my girl becomes passionate about, and it’s great to know that there is this level of energy and support available for her if she does.

Do your daughters play?
