Nostalgia Toys Meme

I’ve been tagged by Iona at Redpeffer in her fabulous nostalgia toys meme. It’s simply asking us to share a few of our childhood toys. It’s an excuse for me to be totally indulgent and take a happy trip down memory lane…

Where to start? OK, babyhood. I was a 70’s baby, so the toys that I played with back then, and have stayed with me, are predominantly Fisher Price. My first toy was a chime-ball with little rocking horses in. My brother’s was a spinny pyramid thing with mirrors and squeaky buttons. How do I know this? My mum still has them both, and they have been enjoyed by Boo and Little Man. In fact, if I’m feeling nostalgic, I do just need to go to my mum’s house, as she has a loft full of things from our childhood, and anything that’s age appropriate for my kids now has made it’s way down to her conservatory – they love it!

As I grew, my love of books grew. In that loft, just waiting for Boo to be old enough, are stacks of Enid Blyton books, my precious copy of The Animals of Farthing Wood and ladybird classics aplenty. I also have Roald Dahl books, but have those here with me and have started reading those to her – couldn’t wait!

I remember winters filled with board games and computer games (you know the sort that would take an hour or so to load? Patience back in those days!) and summers filled with playing out in the garden, building dens with sheets and playing with Lego inside them. Lego is timeless. Mum still has loads, of course, though it was mainly my brother’s. We got Boo her first proper Lego set for Christmas, so I look forward to seeing her and Little Man having similar summers.

And to my favourite childhood toy? The one that saw me spend hours and hours in my own little world? That occupied me for a fair few years? Yes, it is this, and here I am enjoying it with my brother, red eye, gap teeth and all! This was Christmas Day, 1983..

And here are Boo and Little Man enjoying it this year…

As you can see, my fabulous mum kept my Sindy house, complete with extension, furniture, several dolls, horses a car, and so on, in her loft, and then moved it all downstairs and cleaned it up for the kids (and me?!) to enjoy.

I had a very happy childhood, with a great little brother, and I really hope that my kids will look back on theirs so fondly one day.

I’m off to link this up with Iona, and I’ll tag Time Waits For No Mum, Broody Me and Brummy Mummy of 2, if they’d like to share…

Oh, and on the off-chance you were in any doubt, yes of course I have a My Childhood Pinterest board! Looking through that takes me right back – how about you?

  1. Oh I remember the Fisher Price ball! My first toy that I remember was a little push along wooden trolley, with wooden building bricks in, although more often than not I would sit in it and my brother would push me along!!

  2. Oh, you were cute. I love the gappy teeth! Isn’t it lovely to see your own children enjoying toys you cherished as a child too. And I have really enjoyed sharing my vast Enid Blyton collection too 🙂

    1. Thank you – yep, a few teeth issues there! It’s lovely to see them & the books will be fab 🙂 Thanks for the tag, really enjoyed this x

  3. Wow i am very jealous of your sindy house. It looks amazingl I would have loved to have one of those growing up. I can’t actually recall a specific toy growing up that I loved. How sad is that. I remember I used to collect teddy bears and stuffed animals. I had hundreds and when I moved out my mom was not happy I left them all for her! hahaha Thank you so much for linking up to Share With Me. I love reading post like this and getting to know more about you! #sharewithme

    1. It was (and is!) brilliant. I had loads of toys I loved, but this one really stands out and it’s lovely to see my kids enjoying it now. Thanks for hosting x

  4. I spotted a Sindy house with furniture in a charity shop the other day – it was £70 and I’m still debating whether or not to buy it! I bought Bunny a Sindy for her birthday last year as they’re so much nicer than the modern Barbies, so it is tempting to go the whole hog!

I can’t believe what good condition yours is in though! I’m sure mine fell apart from being moved around so much! I love the then and now photos – so lovely to see how timeless these toys are!

    1. Oh, go buy it! Imagined the hours of play the girls will get from it? It is in good condition still, amazingly!, and I know my two will play with it for years to come 🙂

  5. What a great post! I love the fact you managed to find a photo of you and your brother back in the days, and one of your two little ones playing with the doll’s house (It looks really huge and impressive by the way!). x Mel

  6. Lovely post! And has made me feel very nostalgic for all my childhood toys… My parents have recently moved so everything’s packed up in storage. I’ll definitely have to raid the boxes when they’re unpacking – my mum’s a hoarded like me so hopefully there’ll still be lots of gems to rediscover 🙂 x

  7. What a lovely meme! Nothing better than board games – especially in the middle of winter with the rain belting against the windows and a mug of hot chocolate in your hand! I had a dolls house very similar to this and loved it! #sharewithme

    1. Oh, I do love board games! I’m really looking forward to my two being old enough for family games nights 🙂 It is a lovely meme – join in, it’s fun!

  8. Love the picture of you and your brother – it’s great, and even better that your mum kept it for your kiddies to play with! That is amazing! I need to write my one of these, have got the piccies but need to actually write it!
    xx #sharewithme

    1. I know – I’m so pleased she kept it! Lots of fun, & I really enjoyed writing this. Look forward to reading yours 🙂

  9. What a great post! I wish I had kept more of my old toys now that I have children myself. My husbands parents kept all of his old toys and now my son loves to play with his old He-Man figures lol #sharewithme

    1. Oh, He-Man – brilliant! We’re the other way round, as my husband would have loved to share his He-Man toys & transformers with the kids, but his parents didn’t keep them!

  10. I used to love my Sindy house. Did yours have a lift down the side? Mine did but I think it broke after a couple of times playing with it 🙁
I was also a huge Enid Blyton fan, my hardback books must be somewhere in my mums loft! x

    1. Yes, and the lift is still there! A bit temperamental, though. I’m thinking it’s nearly time to dig out the Enid Blyton books for Boo – can’t wait! X

  11. WOW!! Fab post bringing back so many happy memories of some awesome toys. Care Bears, Barbies & My Little Pony’s. I always asked for a Mr Frosty and NEVER got one – I think I deprived as a child!! Great post xx #sharewith me

    1. Oh yes, I loved My Little Pony! I wanted a Mr Frosty, too, and never got one. Guessing they were actually over priced rubbish then, but we couldn’t spot that at the time! X

  12. Lucas says – The Mother & Daddy often talk about toys from the olden days(!) and whilst I am sure they were cool, nothing is better than a NERF gun!!! But does LEGO count? I LOVE LEGO…….. I thought your pictures were cool xx #sharewithme

    1. Oh yes, Lego absolutely counts and it is undoubtedly brilliant! Though we were unfortunate not to have Nerf guns….!

  13. Oh I wish my mum had kept my Sindy house! The best I can boast is that I kept a lot of my grown-up kids toys and the little ones enjoy them now. We have also just finished reading The Animals of Farthing Wood, 1&2

  14. Like ‘Life at the Little Wood’, I am also very jealous of your Cindy house. My friend had one (and all the gubbins to with it) but I never did… I loved the lift on the side of it! That’s not to say that I was deprived in the least. Lovely that you’ve got the 2 pics on your blog.

    1. It was, and is, fab! A great toy, well looked after by my mum! I love having the 2 shots, too. Moments to cherish and preserve 🙂

    1. Oh yes, love those! And thank you. She was a Dalmatian and border collie cross, and lived to the great age of 19. Lovely dog 🙂
