Muppet Christmas Carol Day

muppet christmas carol

Everyone has this day, right? In the build up to Christmas? A family tradition, and an official ‘day’? No?! Why not??!

Muppet Christmas Carol Day is a big deal in my family. It started when my brother and I still lived at home, though we struggle to recall exactly when it began. It already existed by the time I met the Husband, and as that was back in ’97, we can safely say it’s a fairly longstanding tradition!

The Husband was soon introduced to it, and then my brother’s wife, and now my children. It tends to be the second weekend in December, and we get that date booked in with all parties around about now. It has been booked in for 2013.

What is it? Well, you’ve perhaps already deduced that there’s viewing of The Muppet’s Christmas Carol! Good old Michael Caine, and we not only know every song, but probably every word, too.

You may be thinking, well, I should think so after so many viewings, and yes, it’s been watched a fair bit, but only ever once a year. Thems the rules, you see. Yes, we watch it, but only ever together, annually, on Muppet Christmas Carol Day.

We’ll swap Christmas cards at this point, too, and in the run-up to this precious day, my mum will also go and buy her tree. It will be decorated the day before and this day will be the ‘tree reveal’ day.

She will buy a ridiculous quantity of sweets and chocolate bars and make us all up our own Christmas sweetie stockings, which will be received as the viewing commences, and will continue to provide us with snacks while visiting over the Christmas period. This in itself sparks another tradition – the swap and trades of sweets.

My sister-in-law is quite generous with her swaps. She’s been known to swap out her Mars bar and a pack of Poppets for a Curly Wurly. I like a Curly Wurly, but that’s clearly disproportionate. Drives my brother mad, as it’s rarely in his favour, and he issues warnings prior to the swap session to her – which she of course heeds as she totally listens to him… 😉

And then we watch. We sing, we giggle, we ‘light the lamp, not the rat’ and we moan at my children if they interrupt our most crucial screening of the year!

Normal? It’s absolutely normal to us, and I genuinely cannot imagine not having this day as part of our run up to Christmas. It has to be my favourite family tradition – what’s yours?

Sharing is caring!

  1. I love this tradition – I am thinking that this would be fantastic for us actually – get my sisters round once at Christmas for a viewing of this (my favourite film ever, not just at Christmas!) my only worry is if I would be able t limit myself to just one viewing 🙂 thank you for sharing this idea xx

  2. Lol, we have a Muppet Christmas Carol day too! Ours happens over a special pre-Chritsmas weekend in the Cotswolds where we spend time with family we’re unable to be with over the. Chrsitmas period. I love that film. We all do. So nice to hear about other families traditions 🙂

  3. Was discussing this film today. I was asking a friend her opinion on what DVD to get for my children (5 and 2 years old) for their Christmas Eve box. I was thinking of either Miracle on 34th Street or Muppet Christmas Carol, but as I hadn’t seen this I wasn’t sure. She was vocal about it being the muppets.

So Christmas Eve will our first Muppet Christmas Carol day.

  4. Brilliant! I love it, I especially like that you get together with your brother and family to watch it! We watch Christmas films all the way through December and this is one of our favourites, I hope Lucas enjoys them as much as we do. We usually watch them on a Sunday afternoon with some treats; I start off with my least favourites and work my way up to Home Alone 🙂

  5. We moved to Catalonia a couple of years ago and have adopted their tradition of the ‘pooing christmas log’. It’s a little log that you paint a face on. You feed it all December with scraps from the kitchen. Then on Christmas Eve the children have to hit it with sticks and sing a song that translates as “Poo your presents” and then the presents appear as if by magic!

  6. We LOVE Muppet christmas carol! We watch it every christmas eve, last year we made a den for us all to get in to watch it, the kids loved it, so I think we will be watching it like that again this year.
Christmas wouldn’t be christmas without ‘muppet christmas carol’!

  7. How lovely to have such a nice family tradition. I really wish to make some of our own Christmas traditions, both me and my partner come from split families, and I have no more relatives. So we really need to come up with our own family things now. However I have a feeling Christmas Eve just might be delivering last minute parcels in our local area with the car! #PoCoLo

    1. Yes, you should definitely create your own – it’ll be loads of fun to make them up, if you’re not out on deliveries.. 😉

  8. What a lovely tradition! We don’t have anything like that really… I have to say though, that while the kids and hubby would love the Muppets, if they wanted me there, it would have to be a different film… The muppets scare the hell out of me, I hate puppets! Wonderful post 🙂 #PoCoLo

  9. Yikes – I have to admit I haven’t even seen it. But have now wonderful image of a family gathering watching the Muppets …and presumably by now singing along to all the songs? Wish we had some tradition like this.

  11. What a FANTASTIC tradition! I love the Muppets Christmas Carol! It’s funny to read this, I was just thinking about what Christmas tradition I’d like us to create for our little unit. Our tradition in my family is around preparing food which happens weeks before Christmas and involves dancing, laughter and tasting! Xx #PoCoLo
