Making Kids Christmas Placemats

Last weekend the kids and I made a handprint Christmas tree, and while doing so, we created lots of paper with handprints on, as you would. We used several for our tree but still had some left over and I felt a bit sad to throw them away. Then the idea struck me that we could make something else with them. Christmas placements.

This will be the first year that we are hosting Christmas, and I’m looking forward to setting the table. Boo and I have been out and chosen a festive table runner, candle, crackers and napkins, and now we will have some special placemats, too.

Initially I toyed with the idea of using the hands to create a design, a bit like the tree. But then I decided it would be more fun for the kids to give them carte blanche and let them just get on with it. So they were set up and ready and eager to decorate their own handprint sheet using Christmas tape, stamps and felt tips.

They absolutely loved doing this. It was sweet to see them both engrossed and how differently they each worked on it.

Once they were happy with their pictures, I laminated them both so that we will be able to use them as placemats on Christmas day. Just seeing their handiwork being laminated made them both so proud, and they were very keen to show daddy when he arrived home. I know that they are going to love getting them out and setting them on our Christmas Day table, and it could well be the start of a new tradition for us here, and a lovely way to preserve precious moments in time.
