Have You Made Your Will Yet?

Have you made your will yet? I must admit that I hadn’t until this month. And with children aged 8 and 5 years old, it has been one of those things that I’ve been meaning to get around to for years, but I just never have. Why? I thought it would be a lot of hassle, time and expense, so I simply kept putting it off. And it seems that I’m not alone, as only 1 in 10 parents in the UK has officially appointed guardians for their children and written wills. Well, thanks for an invitation to do so from Farewill, the Husband and I have both now have wills in place.

Launching at the end of 2016, Farewill are now the biggest will writer in the UK. Their wills cost £50, or £85 for a couple, plus an optional £10 per year for the ability to keep it up to date. Not as expensive as I’d imagined, and if you’re having the same thought, you’ll be pleased to hear that I’ve a further discount code off that price for you, so do read on.

The process is all completed on-line from the comfort of your own home, and so far about 65% of their customers have been parents with children below the age of 10, the category that we fall in to, and I can really see the appeal of this process for parents. I settled down at my computer to do it, thinking in all honesty that it’d be around an hour to do, which still seemed pretty fast to sort something as important as this, but it turns out I’d hugely over-estimated the time needed to do this.

On logging onto the site, there are a few preliminary questions to ensure that you’re eligible to complete it online like this. The site is only suitable if you live in England or Wales, do not have a disabled dependent, and do not have a complex foreign estate such as property outside of the country. It was fine for us, so I ticked the relevant boxes and moved on to the specifics.

I answered questions such as my name, post code and date of birth, details of my marriage and my dependants, guardianship and who my estate should go to in the event of my death. Of course, being married, all of this was very straightforward and I had no special requests, gifts or funeral arrangements which I wanted to add, though there were options to complete all of this and it would only have added another few minutes to the process.

It took me literally ten minutes. And that was with me double checking it all over. My will was then ready to download and print. The legal team do check it over and get back to you within five working days to confirm that all’s well with it, and at this point you need to sign it, along with two witnesses, and then pop it in a safe place. All done.

I can’t help but be impressed with this service. The website was very clear and easy to use, and throughout the process there was a live chat available to assist me if I needed it. I am certain that, if like me, it was the idea of it taking ages and being a hassle that was putting you off, you’ll be pleasantly surprised as I couldn’t have been more wrong.

If you’re in a relationship, Farewill caters for you by offering a discount for couples, rather than mirror wills. Mirror wills are similar documents created on behalf of a married, civil partnership or unmarried couple. They are virtually identical wills where one member of the couple leaves their estate to other in the event of their death. Farewill doesn’t offer one ‘mirror will’, but instead offers a discounted deal allowing you to both get separate wills. The result is exactly the same legally and gives each partner more flexibility to leave personal gifts and messages. For more information visit Farewill.

I am now delighted to be able to offer my readers a 30% off voucher to use at Farewill. Just use the code READING-RESIDENCE30 on the payment screen to claim your discount, which will last for 6 months from now.

So have you made your will yet? With 30% off, now seems like a good time to do it!
