I Love It, But Will The Kids?

I’ve loved history for as long as I can really remember. I distinctly recall sitting in my friend’s bedroom when we were around 9 or 10, and working on our Henry 8th project for school, and we could have chosen any topic in the whole world to present on, but we went for history. It carried through to my GCSE’s, ‘A’ levels, and I had a place to read History at Warwick University, though I didn’t end up taking them up on it, but that’s a whole other story…!

My parents are not very interested in the subject, so I know it wasn’t their influence that had me hooked. But I would like to think that maybe, just maybe, one of my pair will share my enthusiasm for the subject, one day. And until they really grasp what it’s all about, we’ll be going out and about exploring, having adventures, surrounded by beautiful sites, brimming with history…

On our recent trip to Lincolnshire, we took in Tattershall Castle, Lincoln Cathedral and Castle, Gunby Hall and Belton House. These photos are from Tattershall Castle and Belton House. The kids are probably oblivious to the history surrounding them, but it’s the excitement that I see in their faces as they run from room to room and career around the grounds and gardens that makes the trips feel magical, and I’m sure that all of the history is seeping in somewhere!

How about you? What passions are you hoping your kids will share with you?

  1. I love a good castle or stately home myself. Thankfully, we’re passing this on to my daughter. She doesn’t see the history but the adventure…and the cake in the coffee shop we always visit. Never really spent any time in Lincolnshire but these sound like great places to visit. Emma

  2. Beautiful photos of your family enjoying the majestic surroundings – how can anyone fail to be impressed! I think time will tell whether you have passed on your passion of History to them. Thanks for linking up and sharing with Country Kids.

Thanks, Fiona. Yes, you’re absolutely right, time alone will tell. And until then, they’ll still enjoy the running about!

  3. I love history-so does my daughter and I’m hoping my son will too. We were always visiting castles and stately homes as children and we’re carrying this on with our two. I do think many places are much better set up for families these days as well-how can you not enjoy a good castle with knights battling around you? 🙂
    Lovely photo’s too.

Yes, you;re right, the National Trust is certainly very family friendly, and places do try hard to bring it alive for us all, which I love! Thank you xx

  4. Fantastic post and gorgeous photos – I thought I recognised a couple of places and then you said belton House! One of my all time fave places we used to go when I was a kid. It’s funny because I did not love History at all at school, but I really really love it now and definitely hope to make it interesting for Monkey too. I took Geography GCSE instead of History and I wish I hadn’t, sadly my teenage brain assumed Geography would have been learning about the world… rather than footpath erosion and CBDs which is what it turned out to be!! xx #countrykids

  5. Oh amazing pics lovely! I love a geeky visit to a castle. I am defo going to be one of those Mum’s that drags their kids all over the shop – oh especially to old churches. They will hate it! #countrykids xxx

  6. They look like they are enjoying themselves! I think that taking them on trips like this is a sure way to enthuse them! When I was young I loved anything gory to do with history – hangings, leeches in medicine, egyptians cleaning their teeth with dead mice etc! I hope that my children share my love of England and animals! Especially horses.

They certainly love going to these places, but I suspect it’s the space to run around in that enthrals them! Oh yes, that might be how I get them into it – the gore! I hope your plan to bring them back to England every summer comes off so that they too can love England xx

  7. I knew I recognised it! We love Belton. In fact its the reason we have a greyhound after meeting the Lincolnshire Greyhound Trust there and the kids wishing for a dog in a wishing pond there. have never had time to learn about the history though, kids too busy running wild!

Yes, that’s always my problem, too – lovely places visited but no chance to read about them!

  8. I’m sure as you visit more historical places as the children get older they’ll naturally have an interest in the history side of things. You photos are gorgeous, I love all the places you visit! x

They probably will. Even if they’re uninterested, they’ll be unintentionally knowledgeable! Thanks you very much 🙂
