Gruffalo: Puzzles – A Fun New App!

Now I don’t normally share apps, but when Magic Light Pictures got in touch about their new Gruffalo: Puzzles app, I could not resist – we all adore The Gruffalo here! It was one that I suspected the kids would enjoy and one that I suspected would be beautifully animated and it turns out I was right on both counts.

Gruffalo: Puzzles App

Based on ‘The Gruffalo’, the classic children’s picture book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, the app includes six different puzzle games to play. You can play with all the characters from ‘The Gruffalo’, the UK’s favourite bedtime story, it’s perfect for 3 – 6 year olds.

It features 6 character led games and 18 levels that combine fun game-play with intuitive design. It’s been carefully developed to improve cognitive ability, working memory, logical thinking and hand eye coordination.

Players can play with the Gruffalo, Mouse, Fox, Snake, Owl and even race against them all, in these six games:
• Pit their memory skills against Mouse!
• Test their aim against the Gruffalo!
• Get colourful and paint with Fox!
• Help Owl fly to his tree top house!
• Slither through the maze with Snake!
• Ready, steady, go! Clear the track and race the characters!

The games are brought to you by Magic Light Pictures, producers of the Oscar nominated animations ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘Room on the Broom’ as well as the ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ and ‘Stick Man’.

Our Thoughts:

Little Man is 4 and Boo is 7 so they are just the right ages to give this one a go. The games each have three levels, bronze, silver and gold acorns and I’d say Little Man is comfortable on each of the bronze levels and is able to play and win the silver levels on 2-3 of the games. Boo, at 7, can play gold level on all of these and tends to win, though she does have to concentrate to do so and loves playing them all.

Little Man’s favourite game is Forest Race, where you can choose to be any character racing against the others and you have to remove obstacles in your path. This one’s pacy and it’s funny to see him battle against the others!

Boo’s favourite game is Paint with Fox. Fox colours a picture in, it then reverts to no colours and you have to copy what Fox did. It’s a good test of memory, colour recognition and having a steady hand.

And my favourite? Mouse Match. This is a game of matching pairs with Mouse. I’ve always enjoyed a little memory test and it never ceases to amaze me how good both of the kids are at this!

Both children are keen to play this regularly, and they enjoy watching each other take part. I think the familiarity of the characters endears it to them and they have fun choosing to race as all of them in Forest Race. It definitely gets a thumbs-up here, one for fans of The Gruffalo.

Gruffalo: Puzzles will be available for iOS and Android this Friday, 23 December, priced at £2.99.

    1. I’m with you there but I just couldn’t resist this one and the kids love it. I’ll check Pip & Posy out, too, as my son loves those books, thanks
