Everdine Review

You may have spotted recently that I am getting back to the gym. As I want to feel fitter and healthier, I have also been pondering our meal options. We need to eat more healthily, though I often struggle to make the time to cook from scratch and feel I lack the patience and skills to do so. I also feel we’ve got into a rut with some of our meals, so I wanted to try new ideas. With all of these thoughts buzzing round my head, when Everdine got in touch asking me to review their meal service it was actually perfect timing as it gave me something different to try.

Everdine say:

Clean & wholesome gourmet meals. Cooked & frozen, courier-delivered. Most meals ready to eat in around 10 minutes. Eating clean made simple.

Mindful Sourcing: All our meats and fish are sustainably sourced. We use only best ingredients from suppliers we know well and who meet our strict quality standards.
Skillful Cooking: Our chefs Matt and Viresh trained in Michelin-starred restaurants, and create unique, wholesome and delicious meals for you.
Natural Preservation: Freezing locks in all the natural goodness with no need for artificial preservatives. Sheep wool insulates your food during delivery.

This gives me new meals to try, healthier options, and without needing to cook them myself. OK, winning so far.

Ordering Process

The selection process is not only very fast and easy to do, it is also enjoyable. You take a look at the meals on offer where you can look more closely at the ingredients and nutritional information. You then simply click on the meals that you’d like and the quantity and then go through to delivery and payment details. I opted for the 8 Classic Meals and picked out a few that I was familiar with that I knew I’d like and then a couple that I had not tried before.

Delivery

On the delivery date that you have chosen, you will receive a text and email giving you a one hour window for when your meals will arrive, and the option to rearrange then if this does not suit. Mine did arrive in the allotted time slot, and this on the box perfectly summed it all up for me…

Everdine box contents

All meals were neatly and individually packaged, with clear labelling and instructions. I had chosen: Roasted Cauliflower & Barely Risotto, Pulled Beef Ragu Spaghetti, Mushroom Spaghetti Carbonara, Lemon & Black Pepper Chicken, Cajun Blackened Salmon and BBQ Pulled Pork with Boston Beans, a couple of which I’d ordered two of.

The Meals

All of the meals come in easy to push out cardboard packages, with simple microwave instructions on the front. They all clearly show their best before dates, too, and many have several months on them so they are handy to keep in.

Once cooked, I have been eating them directly out of the box, rather than pop them upside down onto a plate. They are a good sized portion, as you can tell as the box does fill a standard dinner plate.

The Verdict

Having had all six of the meal types that I ordered now, I’d say  the Cajun Blackened Salmon and BBQ Pulled Pork with Boston Beans were my favourites, and I least liked the Roasted Cauliflower & Barely Risotto. All were generous-sized portions and have filled me up. There’s a good balance of meat/fish with vegetables and carbs in them, and all are tasty. The ones that have more vegetables in have a tendency to go a little bit watery when cooked as it all defrosts, as that happened with the Pulled Beef Ragu Spaghetti, though it still tasted good.

The service and website experience cannot be faulted. It was all so easy to do, well-explained and informative and the delivery itself was prompt and on time.

I like the ease of ‘cooking’ these, as it really is a case of grabbing them out of the freezer and ten minutes later I can eat them, and straight out of the packet! This is great for those nights when I have little time or don’t feel like cooking or for me when I’m home alone at lunchtime as these are better for me than a lot of other quick meals and do fill me up so stop me from then snacking afterwards.

Would I pay for this again, is the big question? No, to be honest, but that is largely down to the fact that these meals are perfect for just me, but then I still need to buy and cook for the kids and the Husband. I am not a fussy eater, and in fact, one of my favourites things about the Everdine experience is that I’ve been eating food that I wouldn’t necessarily have made myself and it’s had me trying new things. This means that I have discovered new tastes, but I found myself still having to cook something else for the other three people in my house so it didn’t end up saving me time. If you tend to eat separately anyway, are looking for meals to be delivered to work or live with people who like to try new things, then this would probably work better for you.

  1. The meals do look really nice and it’s good that they are healthy, but like you I’d have to cook for more people at the same time. Great if you don’t have a big family.
