5 Reasons to Snail Mail

It’s no secret that I love to send snail mail and am a huge advocate of taking time out to put pen to paper. It’s one of those hobbies that becomes just a normal part of life, that pops up and raises a smile at random times and that offers me an hour here and there immersed in my stationery supplies catching up with friends. Most of whom I’ve never actually met, yet they are friends all the same. Writing letters and having pen pals, might seem old-fashioned and pointless in this digital age, but I can think of 5 reasons to snail mail that might just tempt you to do so….

5 Reasons to Snail Mail

Putting Pen to Paper Is Relaxing

I blog, I am on social media a lot, I watch TV and screens and I dash about looking after the kids and home. It is lovely to switch off from devices and technology, surround myself with pretty paper, pens and washi tape and write a few letters.

It’s Lovely Receiving Pretty Letters

Every week I get plenty of junk mail and various bills and statements. These are not exciting. But then every once in a while, I glimpse a pretty handwritten envelope in amongst the rubbish and it brightens my day.

Really, I need to elaborate on this point?!

To Connect With People

You will find like-minded friends, you will find people completely different to you, you will become friends with people you’d not have otherwise met in your every day life. Building friendships in this way is always fun and it’s good for the soul to connect.

You Will Make Someone’s Day

Yes, it’s as simple as that. Whether it’s a note out of the blue, a random postcard or a regular pen pal letter, someone knows you were thinking of them, someone has had a lovely little treat in the post. Why wouldn’t you want to do that?

  1. I have always loved reading wonderful letters that penpals have kindly taken the time out of their busy lives to write, but sadly i lost contact with the penpals I had as a kid so when I saw Jocelyn’s previous penpal matching service I jumped at the chance to recreate the enjoyment and love of making new friends through pen and paper. Penpals is perfect for people like myself who find it hard to get out to make new friends so having the chance to mix my love of all things papery (and to finally get to use all the lovely stuff I have been hoarding lol) and the chance to make new friends was absolutely perfect and I have been thrilled ever since I signed up. To see a lovely hand written letter amongst all the junk that comes through the door is like finding a oasis in a dessert. To me it’s pure bliss and means such a lot to me. Thank you Jocelyn for all your hard work you have put in to making everyone so very happy. And I can’t wait to see how I’m matched to next.

  2. Oh J, I agree with all of that. They are not necessarily very fancy but I have pens I like to use for writing letters, I get very excited when the postman comes, I don’t spend a lot on stationery but I love sending an envelope with a lovely sticker or some washi tape on it. Yes, friends can be people you have never met and you get to learn much more about them than being a Facebook friend. I have always been a scribbler and lover of pen and paper; I so enjoy sitting down and writing to somebody, even if I might get an email reply and not one on paper. I also love the anticipation of hearing news from a friend instead of hearing about it instantly via social media.

  4. We share this passion in common. I have shared pretty much the same reasons in my post about being a pen pal. It is so nice to give and receive them. My husband knows I take time out weekly to do this. He’s just gotten used to me getting letters from everywhere.
